1 In 4 Two Wheelers Sold In India Now A Scooter

India is a country that aspires for small car and big bikes. Cramped up infrastructure means that most people don’t want the same level of traffic hassles you get with a car. The two-wheeler market then is ever-growing and ever-changing, and the latest trend shows a growing acceptance for scooters. The Honda Activa even overtook the sales of the legendary Hero Splendor. According to recent analyses, every fourth two-wheeler sold in India is scooter.

These are of course gearless scooters because the geared scooter is no longer a valuable proposition as Honda learnt with the Eterno. A total of 36 lakh scooters were sold in 2013-14, registering a growth of 23%, while motorcycle sales moved up by 4%. The scooter segment was once dominated by the Chetak and is now ruled by the Activa. The segment was dying in the early 2000′s. Till date scooters are seen as feminine in the Indian market. However, buyers have stared realizing that scooters offer miles more in terms of practicality if not riding pleasure. Particularly for small-scale business owners and every day city riders, scooter save a lot of effort. They offer more in terms off storage and do not require constant gear shifting, making them extremely convenient and easy to ride for even a beginner. Their ease of use makes them simpler to handle than a bicycle.
The majority of two-wheeler sales in India still come through from motorcycles, but the growth rate is what is astounding. Motorcycles will enjoy a superior status, but the fact that the scooter segment has growth by a few lakh units over the past few years, is the reflection of a mindset change. Most of these buyers are male, while female oriented scooters are growing in numbers as well. Families are known to have more than one scooter at home and they are seen as easy to buy, easy to use and an efficient mode of transportation. What’s more is that this is more of a demand for practicality. Eventually, the lifestyle scooter will pick up and brands like Vespa stand to gain considerably.
