Domestic operators add 28 million users in January-March quarter
New Delhi, June 3:
The pace of mobile subscriber additions may have slowed down but India still leads the global growth in new cellular phone users. According to a report from telecom equipment maker Ericsson, Indian mobile operators added 28 million new users during the first quarter of 2014.
Overall, global mobile subscriptions grew 7 per cent in the January-March period at 120 million net additions. The top five countries by net additions, led by India, accounted for more than 50 per cent of new mobile subscriptions in the first quarter.
According to the report, next year the total number of mobile subscriptions will exceed the world’s population. Mobile broadband subscriptions also continue to grow and will reach 7.6 billion by the end of 2019, representing more than 80 per cent of total mobile subscriptions.
Exceed basics
In two years’ time, in 2016, the number of smart phone subscriptions will exceed those for basic phones and by 2019 the number of smart phone subscriptions is expected to reach 5.6 billion. Nearly 65 per cent of all phones sold in Q1 2014 were smart phones.
