Major Car Makers Post Better Sales Growth in July

BANGALORE: The Indian automobile market has begun its slow process to recovery after nearly two years of demand uncertainty in the domestic market.
The country’s largest passenger car maker Maruti Suzuki Limited (MSL) saw a 19.1 per cent jump in domestic sales at 90,093 units in July 2014 when compared to 75,145 units recorded in the same period last year. It reported an overall sales growth of 21.7 per cent in July 2014, depicting the return of demand to the sector.
Hyundai Motors India Limited (HMIL) posted a 12.69 per cent growth in domestic sales at 29,260 units in July 2014 when compared to 25,965 units in the year ago period. “The green shoots of growth are visible with the stabilisation of macro-economic factors and near to average monsoons,” Rakesh Srivastava,  Senior Vice-President (Sales and Marketing) of the car maker said. 
Tata Motors continued its poor run in sales as they posted a 26.93 per cent decline in total sales at 1,49,597 units when compared to 2,04,744 units recorded in the same month last year. Its domestic sales dropped 23.13 per cent to 39,623 units in July 2014 from 51,549 units last year.
Foreign car makers like Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL) saw a 39.97 per cent growth in their domestic sales. Though American car makers Ford reported a 24 per cent increase in overall sales, its domestic sales dipped -3.49 per cent while General Motors saw their sales dip 27.32 per cent.
“There are several indicators to suggest a gradual revival in customer sentiment in the past few months, including cues from the stock market and a steady improvement in manufacturing index,” Vinay Piparsania, Executive Director (Marketing, Sales and Service)  at Ford said.
Ashok Leyland reported a 10.27 per cent decline in its total sales at 7,847 units in July. It had sold 8,746 units during the same month of previous year.
Sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicle in July were down by 8.45 per cent to 5,736 units from 6,266 units sold during the same month of previous year.  Sales of light commercial vehicles in July, 2014 declined by 14.87 per cent to 2,111 units from 2,480 units sold in the same month of previous year.
Homegrown utility vehicles major Mahindra & Mahindra’s domestic sales went down by 4.18 per cent to 33,047 units last month as against 34,490 units a year ago.
